Contrast Mindmap

 This is my mindmap for contrast. I did some research on Contrast, as I looked up the definition and also looked up many images to have a clear understanding on what it is and getting ideas for the jewellery piece I have to make. I also made a Pinterest page of 'Contrast and I got so many ideas of what I am going to make for my jewellery piece. I am going to make a necklace out of beads and brass. For my necklace, contrast will be shown with color, texture (rough and smooth) and materials. Since my final piece will consist of beads I am thinking of making my prototype out of clay to show out the three dimensions of the beads.

 These are our Ashanti bracelets as a class, in the Wits Art Museum at Johannesburg.

 This is the final outcome of my Ashanti bracelet. My bracelet consists of the spiral, the chameleon and my Ashanti proverb animal. I really enjoyed making this Ashanti bracelet. I was overwhelmed with emotions as I soldered all of my objects into my bracelet due to the beauty of my final work. This work was worth all of my time and energy and I am extremely happy with it.

 This is my bracelet with my proverb animal and the spiral. I made small jump rings then I soldered them to the spiral and also to the proverb animal so that it gets attached to the bracelet and doesn't fall off.

 This is my chain bracelet. I made a long wire out of brass then took a circular metal, rolled the wire into the metal. I used my saw blade to cut the wires in the middle, making jump rings. I soldered the jump rings together making it a chain bracelet.

Ashanti Proverb.

 In order for my proverb to fit well into my bracelet, I used a saw blade to cut off, separating the base and the head. I then used my filing tools to file the head nicely, giving it a nice smooth texture on the edges. After that I took my proverb, leaving it in the acid to clean off the dirt.

 This is my proverb after it was casted. My proverb was casted in brass. I am happy with the outcome of my proverb as I can see all the details of the spirals and the lion.

Ashante Proverb design.

This is my design for my Ashante proverb. The two animals that I chose for my Ashante proverb is a lion and a chameleon, combination of both. My proverb states'' Intelligence entails a strong mind, but a genius entails a heart of a lion in tune with a strong mind''. I am going to make a lion's head with spirals as an indication of the lions hair and also an indication of the chameleon.

 This is my base and wax. I first cleaned out my base, using my waxing tools and gas lighter in order for me to insert the wax into the base. I took the long wax, melted it down into the base so that it sticks in and that it doesn't come out. My base alone weighs 55,8 grams. This is where I am going to put my spiral, chameleon and my Ashante proverb before I cast them.

Chameleon and Spiral Design.

 These are my design sketches of my spiral and my chameleon for my Ashante Gold Weights project. For this project, I am going to make a bracelet which which will include the spiral, chameleon and my proverb animal. I am going to make one spiral and a chameleon out of wax then melt it to one long big wax, which will turn it into a tree.

The theme for this task is Contrast. From my perspective, to contrast something is to examine the differences among two or more elements, but compare is to do the opposite, to search for similarities. For this task, I have to basically design and make a jewellery piece which falls under the concept of contrast. The brief explains that I firstly have to brainstorm and come up with ideas. Then I need to do research based on this theme and I also need to choose a jewellery piece by any jeweller that conveys the concept of 'Contrast'  and write about it. After that, I will have to draw and design, do a few sketches with colour renderings. After that I will realize my design as a prototype, make a portfolio reflection and submission, then make my final piece.
